One morning I noticed a group of young children waiting for the bus to take them to school. What caught my interest were the diverse activities that the children were doing to entertain themselves while they waited for the bus. Some were chasing each other. Some were chatting. Most were playing in some way.
The most dramatic difference was between one little girl who was playing with a stick and a little girl involved with her cell phone. The little girl with the stick just picked it up from off the ground and was twirling it around. Perhaps it was an imaginary baton or a magic wand. Her face was animated as her whole body swayed with the stick as if dancing with the wind. A smile never left her face. Another little girl was totally absorbed with her cell phone. She stood ramrod straight. Her face tense with a grimace. Her thumbs madly punching the keys of her phone. She looked like a fragile statue that would break if she moved.
Both little girls were focused with the activity on hand. One was free and easy, while the other was regimented and driven. As I watched them I thought of our relationship with God. Are we free and easy with God, comfortable, like a friend or are we tight and driven? If we are with a close friend aren’t we most likely to be comfortable? If we are regimented and tight who controls the conversation with God? Our conversation with God is our prayer. A conversation is a dialogue. Do we give God, a chance to speak and do we listen to what he has to say? Find a stick in your backyard and twirl it around. See where God leads you.
Bible Vs. Proverbs 1:2-7 “That men may know wisdom and instruction, understand words of insight, receive instruction in wise dealing, righteousness, justice, and equity; that prudence may be given to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth- the wise man also may hear and increase in learning, and the man of understanding acquire skill, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.”
Prayer: O Lord, let me be childlike in my prayer. Let me approach you as I would a friend. Help me to hear what you have to say to me. Give me comfort so that I can help comfort others. Let me accept your mercy so that I may freely give mercy to others. Remind me to be open and honest in my relationship with you so that I can bring your Word, and not mine, to all people. Amen
