Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

The North Union Farmers Market will be celebrating the strawberry with "Farm to Table - Year of the Strawberry on Monday, June 3 at the Cleveland Botanical Garden.  So, this week, why not pick up strawberries!?  Also in season-- rhubarb!  We all know what you're thinking-- time to bake a strawberry rhubarb pie!  But don't stop there-- there's a LOT you can do with both of these, such as this chilled and fresh Strawberry, Rhubarb, and Watermelon soup.  Make sure you check out Pinterest for more locally grown, fruity recipes to enjoy.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

It's an easy one this week... with some thunderstorms brewing this weekend, make sure you don't touch any downed electrical lines, or anything around it (like branches or trees) and stay away from them until the emergency crews arrive. Once power is restored, gradually turn on the electrical appliances.

If you're doing your cooking inside, here's some tips to keep the heat and energy use down-- develop the habit of "lids-on" cooking to permit lower temperature settings, cook as muchof the meal in the oven at one time as possible, and include more stews, stir-frys, and other single-dish  meals on the menu.

Onion Tarte

There will be Mitchell's strawberry ice cream at Shaker Square, and strawberry short cakes at Crocker Park.  But what else?  Onions and zucchinis/squash are in!  Listen to the MP3 below, or on-air this morning, and you'll here Donita Anderson talk about an onion tarte-- here's a recipe we found on our Pinterest page that you might like to try!

Seal your heating and cooling ducts!  Ducts that move air to and from a forced air furnace, central air condition or heat pump are often big energy wasters.  Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20% or more.  Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage.  Use duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts.  After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap the ducts in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.  Next, seal ducts that you can access in the heated or cooled part of the house.

Cauliflower

This week, cauliflower, broccoli, new potatoes, green beans, raspberries, and sweet cherries are now in season! In the mp3 below, Donita talks about how versatile cauliflower is, and how her favorite is adding some garlic and chicken broth to create a soup.  Below, you'll find that recipe on our Pinterest page, along with many other cauliflower dishes, everything from buffalo cauliflower to cauliflower pizza crusts!  Listen in to the rest of the mp3 too for information on how to clean and save the sweet Ohio strawberries that are just about out of season, that you can keep them all throughout the year, and some exciting news about artisan cheeses in Ohio!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

What to do if someone is electrocuted?  First and foremost call 911 immediately, and don't touch them yourself-- you in turn can be shocked if the equipment is still energized.  Shut-off the electricity, either at the appliance or circuit breaker, and seek medical attention.  Only perform first aid or CPR when the injured party has been removed and isolated from the electrical source.

It's hot out there!  Keep it cool by beginning to cook on highest heat until liquid begins to boil.  Then, lower the heat control settings and allow food to simmer until fully cooked.

You can save energy with your car-- just as a tune-up for your car can improve your gas mileage, a yearly tune-up of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

The pinnacle of summer is here... it is HOT out!  So, if you have air conditioning, chances are that it is running at full blast.  Be sure to seal your heating and cooling ducts to save energy!  Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters.  Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent- and sometimes much more.

Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage.  Use duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts.  After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap the ducts in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer o r cold in the winter.  Next, seal ducts that you can access in the heated or cooled part of the house.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

Make sure that your home and business has working smoke detectors.  It is recommended that you replace the battereis of your smoke detector twice a year.  A good rule is to change the batteries when you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

Grilled Garlic Shrimp with Melon

Melons are now in season, with the continuation of tender greens, sweet corn, and of course garlic, and in the MP3 below, you'll hear that Donita brought in some melons and kale for Mark! To marry those ingredients, here's a recipe (sort of... spinach is at least still an in-season tender green!). Stop by and see us!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

If every household replaced its most commonly used incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, electricity use for lighting could be cut in half.  Doing so would lower our annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 125 billion pounds.  This action alone could halt the growth in carbon dioxide emissions from the United States, given recent growth rates.

Are you swimming a lot now that it's the middle of August?  Be sure to dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from your lighter-weight clothes to save energy!
