February 2013 marks what would be the 90th birthday of Dexter Gordon. Known for a sound as big as his 6’ 6” frame, “Long, tall Dexter” was one of the most influential tenor players and the first to translate the language of bebop to the tenor saxophone.

Tri-C JazzFest joins Paris, Copenhagen and NYC in special tributes to Dex in 2013. TCJF SoundWorks, JazzFest’s resident ensemble, will include saxophonist Javon Jackson in the Cleveland tribute. An alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Jackson has toured and recorded with Elvin Jones, Betty Carter, Ron Carter, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Les McCann. He has appeared on over 125 recordings.

TCJF SoundWorks is led by trombonist Chris Anderson and features Cleveland stalwarts Howie Smith, Bob Fraser, Glenn Holmes and John Klayman.
